I was thinking "appliance", although a Windows deck might come in handy for work, but seriously, the way things are, this whole linux thing is a bit of a letdown, anyway. Or rather, X11 has been, for a while now. The whole concept is bollocks. What's the point of being able to (re-) nice things when they can still bog down the X-server, and you can't nice them in there? Heck, you can't even "top" them in there to see who's creating all that load! (Though in fairness, if something goes wonky, you usually see load for X *and* the offending process in "top".) We're lucky to have xrestop, and that's still kinda new (the same way pidstat -d is kinda new, and I just don't like sar the same way. In fact, I liked atop best, shame that never went mainline). Current intel drivers for Xorg? Unstable, random load peaks, the works. I'm *not* impressed. If I didn't dislike Apple so much, I might go Mac all the way. :-/ Well, we'll see how it turns out.

well, at least, after buying the mac, you could have the best of all worlds: it'll be able to run Windows, Linux and has a BSD (ie. Unix) base layer. X is available, too.

Ja, das ist vermutlich gedanklich recht harter Tobak, wenn man nicht regelmässig mit feministischer Theorie (und/oder English) am Gange ist. Ich hätte das auch auf "Magazin" schreiben könne ("ohne Vorwissen, Zwischenschritte werden erklärt"), aber dann wäre es drei Mal so lang geworden, und hätte auch mindestens drei Mal so lange gedauert.

ich gehe nicht davon aus. man hat sich dort jetzt auf mich eingeschossen, und ich vermute, dass der großteil dort weder deinen text (sprachlich) versteht noch ein interesse an dieser art von auseinandersetzung mit dem thema hat.

The original idea was that of a backup, "in case I lose my mind," so to say. In that case, it would be almost mandatory that another party be able to restore it, but I guess one could key the passphrase in a safe place, or what not. :)

So weiß ich wenigstens wer Schuld ist, wenn jetzt lauter spannende (oder vielleicht auch doofe) Leute kommen. ;)

Zuerst dachte ich, "Naja, /offensichtlich/ relevant ist ja nur der erste Teil," aber wer sowas liest, ist ja auch potentiell Kunde für die anderen Thematiken. Und der "wie mache ich meinen Sex besser"-Teil schließlich betrifft ja ein breites Segment der Bevölkerung. ;)

Exactly what are you defining as "power"?

To me, "power" is the ability to confront. To stand up, speak out, enforce your will, uphold your own standards. Draw a line and make sure no one crosses it. Or, if they do cross it, they meet with swift, shall we say, correction (punishment seems a little harsh, but there have been times....) There's more than one aspect of power.

Are you talking about the power to use force? Are you talking about the power of will?

In any case, none of these depend on anyone but yourself. I see no reason women are at a disadvantage in either. Strength of muscles doesn't necessarily mean losing a fight. And then, I wouldn't even define a physical confrontation as a win-lose proposition: If you're willing to inflict pain, most times physical confrontation never happens, just by virtue of showing that willingness (eg, bullies don't wanna get hurt and will pick an easier target if you prove a challenge to them.)

Being fat, ugly, old, objectionable, are not dis-empowering. Letting other peoples opinion of you rob you of your inner strength, THAT is.

If you're going to judge the world based on sex & appearance, then sure all those points you made could be true. If you accept those standards and measure yourself by them.

If the people who judge others based on sex & appearance do not like me, this is a GOOD thing! It's an automatic twit-filter to keep them away from me. I have no need or desire to associate with such people.

There is a better class of people who are not so superficial and those are the kinds of people who seek ME out for the qualities of my character, other than sex & appearance. These are my friends.

Your idea of power hints at being little more than favor-seeking from those who "have." I'd rather build my own little world with the resources available to me on my terms, than play the social-climbing games.
